Now that’s a bit more like it.
This isn’t going to be a proper SW19 report on us beating Bromley tonight – as you can see, I chickened out going across south London this evening.
Not to mention Burton last week pissed me off so much I’m glad we had Saturday and Sunday free.
So it’s a couple of idle thoughts instead. The first of which being – it’s a win, and a decent enough one at that.
Yes, Bromley are shit, and one suspects they’re going to be in L2 next season already. You can see why Sheff Weds put seven past them and Orient scored five.
It doesn’t matter quite so much that we only scored two. True, I would have liked a couple more, but it was all about the win and display.
Your editor missed the first 25 minutes, got in just as Tilley went off (and that didn’t look good), and almost considered going out again.
But maybe because of the shite from last Wednesday, and partly because our opponents were a bit turd, we seemed more comfortable.
Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but we’ll be heading back across south London tonight knowing we’ve had a good evening.
Stockley deservedly got MOTM, with his header and (perhaps just as importantly) his pass for Hippo to give us that second goal we badly needed.
And his post-game interview made him sound like he’s a member of Leander rowing club.
I caught JJ’s post game interview on Sky whilst typing this, and obviously he tweaked it. But he was also pleased at how we stood up to Bromley.
I know that they’ve been thumped the last two games, but that makes them more difficult to play against.
Why? Because they have to go back to basics, and there’s professional pride with them as well.
You can go in against such opponents thinking you simply have to turn up to win, but even when we were circling the plughole under Terry Brown in similar circumstances – the first things you do in that position is to give the opposition hell.
So this might have been a better result tonight than first thought.
Make no mistake, we more or less had to win tonight, if only to kickstart us, get a bit of momentum going, and start to look like a unit again.
Especially against a Bromley team that is suddenly finding this division a bit too much already.
Keeping a clean sheet was important too, and I suppose in hindsight we were never really threatened too much.
Bursik already feels like an upgrade, and I think the defenders feel the same too.
McDonnell has done OK when he has played, but him and Bishop** never entirely convinced at the back. Whereas in ninety minutes Bursik already feels like he’ll win us some games this campaign.
** – I wonder what will happen with Bishop from now until January? Would we cancel his contract if another club wants him? Could he end up being an emergency loan for somebody?
What’s clear is that it hasn’t happened for him here, and one suspects going back to loan shotstoppers will be our best option.
Sessegnon feels like an upgrade too, and Harrison didn’t seem to disappoint.
I won’t say it finally clicked tonight, and the next two games will be much different (especially a certain one in ten days time or so), but you feel better after that performance and result.
And both the managers and players do too.
Winning on the road is something that has been beyond us for too long, so it’s nice to get that particular monkey off our back.
There’s probably not much else to say, most of you probably got to see it, and no doubt the millions (?) watching on Sky enjoyed it too.
Though I have to admit, I do feel like a Premier League fan right now – watching my team on Monday night on the box…
