And just when your editor was desperately searching for something to write considering an update, we’ve signed Ross Montague. Cue the OS:
Shortly before Thursday evening’s training session Club Secretary David Charles and Manager Terry Brown completed the signing of 20 year old Ross Montague after he successfully completed a thorough medical.
Ross, who came through the Brentford youth ranks, made his debut against Nottingham Forest in April 2007 and has subsequently spent loan periods at Sutton United, Welling United and Basingstoke Town.
Terry Brown said “I am absolutely delighted to announce the arrival of Ross Montague to complete our squad of 22 players which now gives us cover in every position. Ross is a player we have tracked over the last couple of years. He is a tall strong aggressive front runner with two good feet and an eye for goal.
“He is still in the process of recovering from a knee injury he suffered last year and although he has completed a full pre-season with Brentford he needs to get match fit over the next four weeks. Although he will not be involved over this weekend I hope that he will be able to play at least 60 minutes for the reserves next Tuesday.â€
So, yet another one in the young and promising category. Bit worried about the last paragraph there – were we so desperate to get him that we signed an unfit player? It has been clear to people even as far back as last season that we needed just somebody else up with DK to help him out when things get tough.
Indeed, when DK went off against Salisbury, plenty were indeed grumbling that maybe we should have spent the money on Calum Willock. One presumes that Montague is cheap. He certainly ticks other boxes (young, presumably full timish and more importantly has experience in a higher division) anyway.
So, what do we know about him? Well, according to the Brentford site, he’s a tall bugger – 6ft – and by the look of it has manage to score one goal. Guess he’s a bit of a Derek Duncan type figure, namely somebody who needs a good run in the side. Mind you, this is a bit of a strange set of circumstances – why if he’s fit enough would Brentford get shot of him?
Still, we’ve now got that vital bit of backup which we need. Naturally, we all want Montague to do well and we certainly need to keep the pressure up on our forward line – we won’t get so lucky later on as we were at Alty.
Just one thing – how many of us are wanting an emergency signing at the back right now…?
